Jeremiah
9:23-24

23 Thus says the Lord: “Let
not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his
might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let
him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am
the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in
the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

Reflection:
Trusting in the Lord

Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

Note:
the following is not a political commentary and should not be read as such.

When
I was a church planter in 2008, I started to listen to a worship artist, Paul
Baloche. He wrote one of my favorite songs of all time, “Hosanna.” I loved that
song during those church planting years. Another song I loved was “I Will Boast.”
The lyrics for this song were borrowed from Jeremiah’s prophetic words in
chapter 9. Listen to this song when you get a chance. Here are some of the
lyrics:

Let
not the wise man boast in his wisdom

Or let the strong man boast in his strength

Let not the rich man boast in his riches

But let the humble come and give thanks

To the One who made us, the One who saved us

I
will boast in the Lord my God

I will boast in the One Who's worthy

I will boast in the Lord my God

I will boast in the One Who's worthy, He's worthy

Jeremiah
records God’s words for the Children of Israel: let him who boasts boast in
this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who
practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth
. These
words might nudge your heart a little as they do mine. My heart boasts about a
lot of things. I don’t verbalize these “boasts,” but I do, in fact, have a
boastful heart. Your boasts may not be riches, wisdom or strength… but is your
boast in the Lord? How do I boast in knowing God and his love for me? I am not
quite sure, but we ought to learn! For, after all, “God delights in these
things, declares the Lord.”

Prayer

Lord,
may our hearts boast in you and delight in your ways. May our pride be on you
and how you love us, and not in ourselves .
