Hosea
1:2-3
2 When the Lord first spoke
through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a
wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits
great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” 3 So he
went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a
son.
Reflection:
Hosea and Gomer
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
The
book of Hosea is another interesting prophetic book. Hosea ministered to the
Northern Kingdom of Israel during the time of Assyrian conquest… and he
prophesied approximately from 755-715 BC. The most interesting feature of the
book is found in the first few verses. Extraordinarily, God asks Hosea to take
a prostitute as a wife… committing to her in marriage even to the point of
having children with her. I could not imagine a stranger request! So, in
obedience, Hosea marries Gomer and has a child, Diblaim.
God’s
request is not only strange, but it is also blunt and to the point: Go, take
to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom. It is
clear that the heart of God was for the prophet to understand how God felt when
the Children of Israel acted unfaithfully. You might pick up on the way Hosea
speaks… it is with a particularly broken heart as he tells God’s people to
repent. In the manner that God is long suffering, Hosea must also be. In the
next few chapters, it becomes clear that Gomer is unfaithful in her vows and
sleeps with other men, bearing children of her other lovers. God, amazingly,
commands Hosea to forgive Gomer and to restore her to the marriage. It is
unimaginable that God would demand this of this faithful prophet, Hosea.
However, it puts into perspective how longsuffering God is. He has forgiven all
of our little heart idols and has never divorced us. In this way Hosea is a
reminder of the extraordinary forgiveness of God. Like Hosea, He has forgiven
us significantly more than we could ever comprehend. And he has forgiven sins
that are greater than adultery. Make no mistake, we have been, very often,
unfaithful to God.
Prayer
Lord,
thank you for forgiving us of our unfaithfulness. You are steadfast in your
love and your mercy is infinite.
