Romans 5:12
12  Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned

Reflection: Question #15
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

Question: What state did the Fall bring humanity into?
Answer: The Fall brought humanity into a state of sin and misery.
Pastor Brad, in his last Third Wednesday Theology before the summer, spoke about “why bad things happen.” If there is a good God, who is all powerful, why do bad things happen? It was an excellent teaching in May! If you did not hear it, you owe yourself to listen to it. It goes deeper that this Rooted will go, but I am going to center on the first point Pastor Brad makes: there is suffering and bad things because Adam and Eve sinned. Now clearly the atheist will have a problem with this answer, but I feel certain that the alternative is less satisfactory: “The chaos of evolution has brought about moral chaos and suffering.” Does that bring any comfort to those who do not believe in God?
The Catechism says clearly what the Book of Romans affirms: when sin entered the world so did sin and misery. Adam and Eve brought about a state of damage to the created order… a state of chaos and pain… that we live with every day. Everybody deals with it. No one is immune from suffering and misery. We all die because of this “original sin.” The good news is that Jesus knows our suffering and shared in it on the cross. He is acquainted with our grief. Though he was perfect, he suffered an extreme death of anguish. The Christian faith does not make God the author of pain… never. The Christian faith makes God the conqueror of suffering by enduring the cross, sharing in our suffering, and securing for us life eternal where there will be no more tears. Thank God!

Prayer
Lord, thank you for sharing in our suffering and making a way for us to, one day, escape for eternity the impact of Adam and Eve’s sin!
