Judges 6:36-37
36 Then Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.”

Reflection: Gideon… the “Doubting Thomas” of the Old Testament
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

The Judges were godly men and women appointed by God to lead the people of Israel. Soon they will request a king, but they have forsaken the God of Israel. They have sinned against God, and now they are afflicted by the nations around them. God raises up these godly people, allows His Spirit to rest on them, and they defeat Israel’s enemies. The Book of Judges highlights many Judges, but Gideon has always fascinated me.

This man is a leader who struggles with doubt and faith. God has told him several times that he is with him and will give him the ability to lead the people to victory. Yet he doubts. He asks for a sign early in the chapter, and God delivers him a sign. He does so again with the fleece… twice. God delivers a sign… two more times.
I am encouraged by this story, if I am being honest. I confess that I have seasons of doubt, and in my own ways I ask God to verify himself to me. I think this is natural. The interesting thing in this story, to me, is that God never loses his patience with Gideon. He never scolds him. He simply verifies the signs. He does the same with us. He accepts us, even in our doubts. He is always patient (Moses’ early ministry was similar… and look at how God used Moses!). So… be encouraged today: God can use you even in your doubts! Only be willing to serve him and all will be fine!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for being patient with us in our doubts and shortcomings.
