Ephesians 2:3
3 We were by nature the children of wrath, like everyone else.
Reflection: Question #17
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
Question: What is the misery of that state into which humanity fell?
Answer: The entire human race, by their fall, lost communion with God. They are under his wrath and curse and so made liable to all the miseries of this life, even to death itself, and to the agonies of hell forever.
What a cheery question and answer! Ugh! Not a cheerful topic, but one necessary to discuss. What, indeed, happened as a result of the Fall? Per yesterday’s Rooted, we know that misery, death, and suffering entered the world. Beyond that, we (the human race and all of Adam’s descendants) lost communion with God. Whereas before sin we had fellowship with God, relationship and friendship… after sin we are at odds with God, at “enmity” (King James word), and hostile as enemies of God. A great chasm between our sin and the holiness of God was made and the void was too great for us to cross.
It is terrible to think about. I know so many wonderful people… people who I know do not have a relationship with God and are lost. Such beautiful people that I love, who are, unfortunately, far from God. For those people I often pray. I pray that the Lord will open their eyes such that they see how great God is. I pray that they see their need of God. I pray that God will use me to help show them the terrible state that they are in. They just don’t know. Though they are people I love, and admire… wonderful people… they are, as the Apostle Paul says it, “enemies of the cross.” They don’t know that they are, but they are. They are hostile to God, and they have no way, apart from Christ, to bridge the gap. I (We) need to pray for those we know who have no hope without Jesus.
Prayer
Lord, we pray for those who you have placed in our paths… those who do not know you. Help us to be compelling with our words and our actions, sharing the Good News of your Son, Jesus.
