Deuteronomy 6:4
36 Hear, O Israel: the Lord is our God, He is one. The Lord alone.
Reflection: Question #5
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
Question: Is there only one God?
Answer: There is only one living and true God.
We are Monotheist. We believe in one God. Our Jewish friends accuse us of being polytheist (believing in multiple gods). Muslims, as well as Jehovah’s Witnesses, accuse us of the same thing: polytheism. But the Bible is clear… He is one!
The Ancient Greeks believed in multiple gods… even segregating their levels of god. There were lesser deities, and then deities of higher levels like Zeus. And then you have religions like that of Buddhism where there is a pantheon (collection) of deities, too many to mention. The Egyptians believed that the Pharoah himself was a god, with Amun-Ra being the supreme god. Oh boy… so many gods to keep up with in these ancient religions, many of whom believed in multiple gods. In the Old Testament, the neighbors of the Jewish people worshipped their Baals and Ashtoreth… Molech and Chemosh. And the people of old would sometimes get caught up in the worship of so many false gods. In fact, you can hardly read a few pages of the Old Testament without God vowing to destroy the Children of Israel because they turn to their false gods. Therefore, God has always been clear: there is one God… and we worship him. If the religions of the world are confusing, with their many gods, Christianity and Judaism is radically unconfusing: there is but one God. Praise Him that we have the privilege of worshipping the one true God!
Prayer
Lord, we affirm that you are the one true God, worthy of all our praise and devotion. To you alone we give all glory and honor.
