Proverbs 27:6

10 Faithful are the wounds of a friend…

Reflection: Friendship

Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

Scott Kizzire was the name of my best friend
in high school. I was 13 when I met him at the gym at the Christian high school
I attended in downtown Birmingham. He was (is) a godly person, and he always
acted like that. We would often hang out, and when we did we would play
basketball, and then go play basketball again. Occasionally, through our high
school years, we would do sleep overs at his house or mine. We would play
basketball, play basketball some more, and then watch Andy Griffith. That was
his favorite show, not mine!!! A good, clean show, of course. I can trace back
friendships through the years… good friendships, like Scott.

I was contemplating, with some people the other day, the reasons
why I turned out like I did!! It was an interesting conversation in which we
discussed that people are products of a lot of different influences and
circumstances. However, of all the different things and influences that make a
person, friendship is likely the most important (except, of course, a person’s
parents). And God has blessed me with wonderful friendships. If I were to give
myself some credit (perhaps undeserved), I would say this: I was wise enough
(and lucky enough) to have picked godly friends. I realize that I am blessed to
have had very godly people around me, even as a teen. Friends, godly and good
ones, tell you the truth and, as importantly, don’t drag you down into poor
decisions. I am exceptionally grateful for good friends, like Scott, who
encouraged me in godliness!

Prayer

Lord God, bring to us good friends that pull us up and do not drag
us down. And may we be good friends, genuinely, with others.
