Romans 2:14
14 …When Gentiles, who did not possess the law, do instinctively what the law requires, these, though not having the law are a law to themselves.
Reflection: Question #35
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
Question: What rule of obedience did God first reveal to humanity?
Answer: The rule that God first revealed to humanity was obedience to the moral law.
If you were to do any Google search, or look up on YouTube, “what is a strong argument for the existence of God” I will wager that you will see something about “the moral argument.” You see, people that do not believe in God have to say that there must be an objective standard for what is morally acceptable and what is morally unacceptable behavior. It can not be that every culture determines on there own what is “good” and what is “bad.” The moral argument goes something like this: 1) everyone knows, deep down and innately, what is bad (murder, as an example). We do not have to be told or trained. 2) The “deep down” understanding that there are things that are bad must have come from something outside of us. If we are merely evolutionary beings, then there cannot be a moral standard of right and wrong. 3) Since we can sense that there are things that are objectively right and wrong, there must be a being outside of us who has determined it. (What I just poorly explained is a seriously simplified version of the moral argument).
The Bible, indeed, affirms this argument. The Bible says we have a conscience and that people follow their conscience. The conscience is, basically, the way that God gives all people a moral framework (once again, we do not have to be told that murder is bad). And what is written inside of them (what the conscience intuitively knows), people must obey. According to our verse today, they should be governed by the instinct of what is good and bad (even if they do not have a copy of the Bible). Does that make sense????????? How does this apply to us? Well, at least for me, I am grateful that I do have a copy of God’s Word. I am grateful that I can see with great clarity what God demands of me. I am not left guessing and I am not in the dark. God has spoken and I am blessed to be able to see, in black and white, what he has said!
Prayer
Lord, we are grateful that we have your Word, written with clarity. May we now study it such that we can learn the very heart of God and what you require.
