Proverbs 7:6-9
6 For at the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,
7 and I have seen among the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man lacking sense,
8 passing along the street near her corner,
taking the road to her house
9 in the twilight, in the evening,
at the time of night and darkness.
Reflection: Accountability
in the Light
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
Years ago, I preached a sermon series on purity and
accountability. I used Proverbs 7 as my grounding, foundational text. It seems,
more and more, sexual purity (especially among men) is at an all-time low. The
availability of online content that does not honor God is now so easily
accessible that it can be accessed by minors with no problem. The advent of
technology and the internet has been a blessing in so many ways. It has also
brought about great destruction in the family and in the church. Sexual
immorality is at a pandemic level, and the church seems to not have many great
answers. So many, many people are “addicted…” a term used, sadly, in a way so
as to excuse very bad behavior.
God’s Word, in wisdom that transcends generations and millennia, has
told the godly person the first, most principal step in avoiding sexual
immorality. In a world where we can hide our steps and delete history, Solomon
warns his son, essentially, “avoid the dark!” It is at twilight, in the
evening, at the time of night, and darkness” (note the repetition of the theme
for emphasis) that Solomon observed a young man “lacking sense” making his way
to an adulteress. He is able to hide and cover his steps… creeping near her
corner. The young man thought that the dark would keep him from getting caught.
You see, accountability is the opposite of the dark. Accountability is when you
allow yourself to be inspected… everything in the light. But not for the
foolish young man! Anonymity and shadows are the making of his strategy to get
away with bad decisions. What he does not know, of course, is the sad price he
will pay for his reckless behavior in the dark. It will cost him his life
(verse 23). God help our young men, especially, to learn this several thousand-year-old
lesson: have healthy accountability that is transparent and in the light. Avoid
secrecy.
Prayer
Lord, bless our young men to walk in the Light and with the
integrity befitting the man of God.
